CityCDR webinar: How to Build Carbon Sink Cities – 4/7/2026

CityCDR held a webinar with leading local governments, CDR experts and urban practitioners on how to turn cities into global climate restoration hotspots.

Realizing Carbon Sink Cities can start today and can help realize more resilient and regenerative urban environments. Becoming a Carbon Sink City requires thinking of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) as more than a tool to reach net-zero emissions. It’s about leveraging carbon removal solutions to address pressing social and ecological challenges, while maximizing natural and engineered carbon sinks.

At the end of 2025, the City CDR Initiative published the ‘Pathways to Carbon Sink Cities’ report series. Starting with the Vision Document launched at New York Climate Week, followed by the publication of a Need-Gap Analysis, and concluding with the Implementation Guide at COP30. This webinar presented the findings as part of a discussion with leading local decision makers from the City of Copenhagen (DK), Province of Gelderland (NL), and Boulder County (US), and CDR experts and urban practitioners from SOM, South Pole and the UN High-Level Climate Champions.

Key learning opportunities during the webinar:

  • Urban CDR opportunity landscape
  • The role of challenge-led CDR
  • Developers opportunities and needs
  • Local government best practices
  • Multi-level governance gaps
