Mobilization event at New York Climate Week – 9/24/2025

On September 24th 2025, we are organizing a high-level event on ‘Reimagining Carbon Sink Cities: How to Catalyze Carbon Removal for Sustainable, Resilient, and Inclusive Cities’. The event is organized in collaboration with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Conservation International, the Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance (CNCA), UN High-Level Climate Champions, and XPRIZE.

At the event, we will present the radical idea of the ‘Carbon Sink City’ to reframe discussions on how to transform urban environments into more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive forms of human settlement. This will involve a Vision Document and a presentation of the results from the opportunity baselining research project conducted by the City CDR Initiative. With the event, we aim to mainstream this idea as a new urban planning and design concept involving the integration of CDR across the urban sphere, and elevate it as an international climate action objective and urban development opportunity.

A key outcome of the event is that we socialize city leaders, donors and investors, with evidence-based research on how to integrate natural and artificial carbon sinks in cities, identifying next steps for the inclusion of carbon removal targets and interventions in local Climate Action Plans and investment strategies, while maximizing co-benefits for everyone.
